59% Still Believe Government Is the Problem

In early October, as the meltdown of the financial industry gained momentum following the collapse of Lehman Brothers, a Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 59% of U.S. voters agreed with Ronald Reagan that “government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”

Before I refuse to take your questions, I have an opening statement. Ronald Reagan

Joseph Smith Papers Project: Court Cases

"Part of the scope of our series is to look at all the legal cases that Joseph was involved in, either as a plaintiff, defendant, material witness or judge, as he wore all those hats," Walker explained."Brigham Young is often quoted that Joseph was involved in some 50 court cases," he noted. Brigham Young reported that he was present for most of them and that Joseph Smith was never convicted of any charges.

Quiznos Won’t Give You a Free Sub

To put it simply, Quiznos corporate decided to give away 1,000,000 subs that weren’t theirs to give away. Quiznos not only expected its franchisees to foot the bill for the millions in food giveaways, Quiznos corporate would actually make money selling them the ingredients.

Ex-Astronaut: Global Warming Is Bunk

SANTA FE, N.M. — Former astronaut Harrison Schmitt, who walked on the moon and once served New Mexico in the U.S. Senate, doesn’t believe that humans are causing global warming.
“I don’t think the human effect is significant compared to the natural effect,” said Schmitt, who is among 70 skeptics scheduled to speak next month at the International Conference on Climate Change in New York.

‘One Nation - Under Obama’

Controversial sign must come down
PINELLAS PARK - Randy Heine says he has surveillance video that shows a man and woman climbing over a fence. The couple heads right for a sign that reads "One Nation Under Obama." They paint over Obama and replace it with God.
Heine owns the sign and isn’t too happy about what he caught on tape.
"To me it’s all about racism," said Heine.

Dems seek billions more for 2009

With a new budget cycle about to begin, Democrats scrambled Tuesday to fill in the blanks for this fiscal year, rolling out a nearly $410 billion spending bill that will serve as a benchmark for the Obama administration’s own 2010 plan, due Thursday. Covering more than a dozen Cabinet departments, the giant bill adds another $20.5 billion to former President George W. Bush’s domestic spending requests for the current budget year ending Sept. 30.

1985 Interview with a Soviet Defector

Other than that unfortunate incident with the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union he seems to have things pretty well pegged. But it’s probably too late now.I’ve often wondered who won the Cold War. Especially when I read the newspaper every day.

Sharpton Calls On FCC To Investigate News Corp

BY DANA LINTON

NEW YORK (WPIX) -- Outrage and protests continue to mount over The NY Post's controversial cartoon interpreted by many as comparing President Obama to a chimpanzee that was shot and killed by police in Stamford, Connecticut last week.
Reverend Al Sharpton on Sunday called for a special City Council hearing, urging the city to refrain from advertising in The Post.

World Melts With U.S.

by: Daniel Allen

This worldwide economic crisis could potentially be a serious threat to American national security. Blair continues, “Economic crises increase the risk of regime change and instability if they are prolonged for a one- or two-year period. Instability can loosen the fragile hold that many developing nations have on law and order, and can spill out in dangerous ways into the international community.”

Tea Party Protests

"Tea Party" protests have sprung up in multiple cities across the country since Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed the economic stimulus bill into law as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
As much as I rejoice in the sight of legions of fed-up Americans taking to the streets to protest the central government's colossal waste of the first fruits of their labors, it is important that people understand that the original Boston Tea Party was neither spontaneous nor a mere lark.

Eleven States Declare Sovereignty Over Obama’s Action

In the first five weeks of his presidency, Barack Obama has acted so rashly that at least 11 states have decided that his brand of “hope” equates to an intolerable expansion of the federal government’s authority over the states. These states -- "Washington, New Hampshire, Arizona, Montana, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma, [Minnesota]...Georgia," South Carolina, and Texas -- "have all introduced bills and resolutions" reminding Obama that the 10th Amendment protects the rights of the states, which are the rights of the people, by limting the power of the federal government. These resolutions call on Obama to “cease and desist” from his reckless government expansion and also indicate that federal laws and regulations implemented in violation of the 10th Amendment can be nullified by the states.

The Road to Legalized Plunder

Why is it that Congressman and Senators will vote for a bill, such as the so-called stimulus package, when they are not sure it will accomplish the intended goal? One might go even further and ask why will they vote for a bill that they know will not accomplish the intended goal? The answer to both questions lies in what economists call the rational ignorance of the voters, what Gordon Tullock labeled rent seeking by special interest groups, and the incentives of the political structure.

Obama's Stimulus: A Colossal Waste?

WASHINGTON -- Judged by his own standards, President Obama's $787 billion economic stimulus program is deeply disappointing. For weeks, Obama has described the economy in grim terms. "This is not your ordinary run-of-the-mill recession," he said at his Feb. 9 news conference. It's "the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression." Given these dire warnings, you'd expect the stimulus package to focus almost exclusively on reviving the economy. It doesn't, and for that, Obama bears much of the blame.

Drug Crisis in Mexico

by: Alanna Hultz

Recently there has been a surge in violence and brutal acts committed by drug cartels, causing a national emergency in Mexico. The power of the cartels has allowed them to corrupt governmental institutions and law enforcement agencies at the state and local levels.

Iran holds enough uranium for bomb

By Daniel Dombey

Iran has built up a stockpile of enough enriched uranium for one nuclear bomb, United Nations officials acknowledged on Thursday.
In a development that comes as the Obama administration is drawing up its policy on negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear programme, UN officials said Iran had produced more nuclear material than previously thought.

Presidential Determination No. 2009-15

By the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, including section 2(c)(1) of the Migration and Refugee Assistance Act of 1962 (the ``Act''), as amended (22 U.S.C. 2601), I hereby determine, pursuant to section 2(c)(1) of the Act, that it is important to the national interest to furnish assistance under the Act in an amount not to exceed $20.3 million from the United States Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund.

Obama administration lobbyist count increases

Obama’s first executive order forbade appointees who had served as registered lobbyists to “participate in any particular matter on which [they] lobbied within the two years before the date of my appointment” or “participate in the specific issue area in which that particular matter falls.”

War Over The Climate Heats Up Even As Climate Itself Cools Down

By S. FRED SINGER

President Obama will be hard put to satisfy his several campaign promises: to restore prosperity and jobs, to conduct a foreign policy backed by a strong economy and to satisfy environmental demands to "save the planet." His job will be much easier if he listens to independent advice on climate science.

An A for Effort? Talk About a Lousy Idea

There's a wicked little piece in today's NYT about how college students' somehow, somewhere along the way came to believe that if they put in the effort then they automatically deserve a high grade, regardless of the actual quality of their work.

While the World Cuts Taxes, America Looks the Other Way

Rep. Michelle Bachmann

This might come as a surprise to you, but the United States is near the top of the list of industrialized countries with the highest corporate tax rates.
You may be asking yourself “so what,” or “who cares,” but it’s important to recognize that lower corporate tax rates result in attracting more investment capital. A reduction of the federal corporate tax rate would increase firms’ productivity and investment incentives, and ultimately stimulate our nation’s long-term competitiveness by enhancing economic freedom. The end result would be a boon to your family budget.

Obama and this congress offer Socialist, Marxist cogs in the change wheel!

By Dr. Laurie Roth

Already we are seeing the Socialist, Marxist cogs in the change wheel manipulating away our freedoms and money. Congress and this President have wasted no time from the executive orders to the manipulative speeches and attachments on the ‘stimulus’ bill that insult and betray the American people.
Don’t you love the endless speeches and statements by Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Obama regarding the URGENT need to pass the stimulus bill or our country will go down in heaping flames?

The Real Truth About AGW

The following comment appeared on another blog in response to some green drivel. It bears repeating:
Richard S. Courtney — Jun 23 2008 05:59 PM
Sirs:You say:“And perhaps some scientists are coming out against the idea that humankind has warmed the planet and continues to spew increasing pollutants into our atmosphere. If so, they are awful quiet about their challenge. Perhaps they should post their arguments here and let NRDC's real climate experts take them on."

Liberals’ voluntary taxes amount to zilch for state

By Howie Carr

Moonbats of Massachusetts, what about the children?
It is with deep regret that I must report to you that in this new tax season more than 99.99 percent of the Beautiful People in Massachusetts are again refusing to do the right thing on their income tax returns and voluntarily pay at the old, higher rate.

Awaiting the Awakening of the Forgotten Man

It took less than a month for the default leadership style of President Obama to appear. How long will it take for the forgotten man who believed in him to awaken to the consequences? Amity Schlaes has written an excellent history of the Depression entitled The Forgotten Man, detailing the futility of FDR's supposed cures. So as we face Obama's leadership, it is imporant to remember the forgotten man of our era.

Dem’s Use “Stimulus” as Cover for More Gun Control

By CCRKBA

Dear Concerned Citizen,
The liberals are at it again. In a new bill introduced the first day of the present session of Congress, and with zero coverage from the MSM, H.R. 45 (Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009) targets all gun owners in the U.S.A. While the media the world and everyone else is focused on the “phony plan” to spend tax dollars legislation is sneeking through the House and Senate for more gun control.

Jindal Signals Louisiana May Not Take Stimulus Money

Posted by Brian Montopoli

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, a potential 2012 GOP presidential candidate, has suggested his state may not be interested in all of the roughly $4 billion allotted to it in the economic stimulus package to be signed by President Obama today.

Bank nationalisation gains ground with Republicans

By Edward Luce and Krishna Guha

Long regarded in the US as a folly of Europeans, nationalisation is gaining rapid acceptance among Washington opinion-formers – and not just with Alan Greenspan, former Federal Reserve chairman. Perhaps stranger still, many of those talking about nationalising banks are Republicans.
Lindsey Graham, the Republican senator for South Carolina, says that many of his colleagues, including John McCain, the defeated presidential candidate, agree with his view that nationalisation of some banks should be “on the table”.

Border Patrol Agents Released From Prison

At 3 a.m. Mountain time former Border Patrol agent Jose Compean was released from the Elkton Federal Prison in Elkton, Ohio. Former agent Ignacio Ramos was released about five hours later from the Phoenix Federal Prison in Phoenix, Ariz.
Ramos and Compean will "officially" be released from Federal Bureau of Prison custody on March 20, but on Tuesday both were allowed to rejoin their families as part of a house arrest agreement. They had been in prison since January 2007.

Has NASA's Hansen Finally Lost His Mind?

Hansen branded coal as "the single greatest threat to civilisation and all life on our planet."
He insisted "that the coal source must be cut off" as "a cap only slows the use of a fuel - it does not leave it in the ground." Calling for a "phase-out of coal," Hansen even restated references to the plants as "factories of death," and trains carrying the black rocks to them as "death trains," the latter a toned-down adaptation of these outrageously offensive words he laid on the Iowa Utilities Board back in October of 2007:

Miami banker gives $60 million of his own to employees

By MARTHA BRANNIGAN

After selling a majority stake in Miami-based City National Bancshares last November, all he did was take $60 million of the proceeds - $60 million out of his own pocket - and hand it to his tellers, bookkeepers, clerks, everyone on the payroll. All 399 workers on the staff received bonuses, and he even tracked down 72 former employees so they could share in the windfall.

Former astronaut speaks out on global warming

By Associated Press

SANTA FE, N.M. - Former astronaut Harrison Schmitt, who walked on the moon and once served New Mexico in the U.S. Senate, doesn’t believe that humans are causing global warming.
"I don’t think the human effect is significant compared to the natural effect," said Schmitt, who is among 70 skeptics scheduled to speak next month at the International Conference on Climate Change in New York.
Schmitt contends that scientists "are being intimidated" if they disagree with the idea that burning fossil fuels has increased carbon dioxide levels, temperatures and sea levels.

Does $65.5 trillion terrify anyone yet?

By Jerome R. Corsi

As the Obama administration pushes through Congress its $800 billion deficit-spending economic stimulus plan, the American public is largely unaware that the true deficit of the federal government already is measured in trillions of dollars, and in fact its $65.5 trillion in total obligations exceeds the gross domestic product of the world.

Africanized bees found in Utah

By MIKE STARK

SALT LAKE CITY — Africanized honey bees have been found for the first time in the Beehive State. The bees, long the subject of lore as "killer bees," were recently discovered in Utah's Washington and Kane counties, the state Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that seven hives – three in the wild and four managed by private beekeepers – contained Africanized bees. The hives have since been destroyed.

Adam Smith gets the last laugh

By P.J. O’Rourke

The free market is dead. It was killed by the Bolshevik Revolution, fascist dirigisme, Keynesianism, the Great Depression, the second world war economic controls, the Labour party victory of 1945, Keynesianism again, the Arab oil embargo, Anthony Giddens’s “third way” and the current financial crisis. The free market has died at least 10 times in the past century. And whenever the market expires people want to know what Adam Smith would say. It is a moment of, “Hello, God, how’s my atheism going?”
Adam Smith would be laughing too hard to say anything. Smith spotted the precise cause of our economic calamity not just before it happened but 232 years before – probably a record for going short.

John Kerry: You Know What's the Problem With Stimulus Tax Cuts? All That Freedom.

Sen. John Kerry took to the Senate floor today to pace, rant, and raise his voice in a monotone simulation of human passion as he spoke up for the massive spending bill the Democrats want to pass today under the guise of "stimulus."
During his speech, he addressed the argument made by fellow senators and many economists that tax cuts might be more helpful to stimulating the economy than long-term government spending. The American people are also coming around to that view, according to a recent CBS poll, which found only 22 percent of them favor more government spending over tax cuts as stimulus.
His argument against tax cuts for Americans during these hard economic times was illuminating:

NIreland environment minister bans climate change ads

Northern Ireland's environment minister came under fire Monday after he banned a climate change ad campaign, saying it was "nonsense" to suggest people could save the world by turning off their lights.
Sammy Wilson, a member of the Democratic Unionist Party which shares power with Sinn Fein in the British-ruled province, believes mankind is not to blame for global warming.
He refused to allow an advertising campaign produced in London, which urges people to use less energy in the home, to be broadcast in Northern Ireland, saying it was simply "propaganda".

Stimulus contains rationed medicine

By Bob Unruh

Now Betsy McCaughey, former lieutenant governor of New York and an adjunct senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, has released a commentary warning about the likelihood of rationed care – or a health care system that simply provides treatment when it determines the cost-benefit ratio for the treatment and the patient meets its guidelines.

The Top Six Problems With the Stimulus

by John Hawkins

"In stimulus package language, if Congress taxes to hand out money, one person is stimulated at the expense of another, who pays the tax and is unstimulated. A visual representation of the stimulus package is: Imagine you see a person at work taking buckets of water from the deep end of a swimming pool and dumping them into the shallow end in an attempt to make it deeper.

Mexico is struggling to wage war

Martin Barillas

Mexico is struggling to wage war against its ultra-violent drug traffickers. More than 6,000 people were murdered in 2008, including innocent people, law enforcement officers and military men, as well as narco-traffickers themselves

Ruin Your Health With the Obama Stimulus Plan

Betsy McCaughey

Tragically, no one from either party is objecting to the health provisions slipped in without discussion. These provisions reflect the handiwork of Tom Daschle, until recently the nominee to head the Health and Human Services Department.
Senators should read these provisions and vote against them because they are dangerous to your health.

Obama May Place U.S. Under International Criminal Court

May 6, 2002, when John Bolton, on orders from the President, withdrew the U.S. from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Oh, there were terrible tantrums in Turtle Bay that day! Globalists were dismayed because Mr. Bush’s rejection of the ICC was a vote for American sovereignty -- a refusal to cede authority to international government and a court that is not bound to the principles of the U.S. Constitution, far less our laws.

De-Programming Students

Thomas Sowell

Letters from parents often complain of a sense of futility in trying to argue with their own children, who have been fed a steady diet of the politically correct vision of the world, from elementary school to the university.

Government Bonds May Be Last Bubble

Jim Rogers

Investors will have to short government bonds at some point despite their current attraction, as the amount of debt issued is "staggering" and inflation risks are down the road, Jim Rogers, CEO of Jim Rogers Holdings, told CNBC Tuesday.

Obama has it both ways on pork

By CALVIN WOODWARD

President Barack Obama had it both ways Monday when he promoted his stimulus plan in Indiana. He bragged about getting Congress to produce a package with no pork, yet boasted it will do good things for a Hoosier highway and a downtown overpass, just the kind of local projects lawmakers lard into big spending bills.

Barack Obama throws Joe Biden under the bus

Posted By: Toby Harnden

Clearly, Obama and his aides were unhappy about Biden's loose lips. On Friday, top Obama adviser David Axelrod said on CNN: "I don't know exactly about what that math was."
We're probably going to have to get used to Obama explaining "what Joe may have been suggesting". And Biden must be wondering if he's going to end up as a Dan Quayle figure.
